The 1×1 Rib Stitch is mostly used for collars.
Techniques:
Knit 1 stitch: Insert the right needle from left to right into the next stitch on the left needle. The working yarn is behind the project. Wrap the working yarn once from back to front around the right needle. Now pull the working yarn with the right needle through the stitch in which you have inserted the needle. You now have a new stitch on your right needle. Let the stitch on your left needle slip off the needle.
Purl 1 stitch: Insert the right needle from right to left into the next stitch on the left needle. The working yarn is in front of the project. Wrap the working yarn once from back to front around the right needle. Now push the working yarn with the right needle through the stitch in which you have inserted the needle. You now have a new stitch on your right needle. Let the stitch on your left needle slip off the needle.
Stitch:
Cast-on an odd number of stitches on one of your knitting needles.
Row 1 and all uneven rows: * Knit 1 stitch. Purl 1 stitch. * Repeat until the end of the row.
Row 2 and all even rows: * Purl 1 stitch. Knit 1 stitch. * Repeat until the end of the row.
If you cast-on an even number of stitches, you will knit all rows like row 1, because then your row ends with a purl stitch. If you turn the project, your row will start with a knit stitch. To create the rib stitch, you have to knit all knit stitches and purl all purl stitches.
